As S&P approaches 5,000, this one trend has been unwavering

It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

She inquired about buying Treasury bonds directly, which she has never once inquired about in the past. Asking about putting all your money into bonds and chucking the stock market is like the shoeshine boy talking about stock market tips at the top of the stock market. Individuals can of course buy Treasury bonds directly from the U.S. government through TreasuryDirect. Similar products, such as the Schwab Short-Term U.S. Treasury ETF and the SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF, also have seen significant inflows in recent months. "ETFs for Treasurys are preferred by many, basically all because they trade like a stock," Morris told me.
Subsidies from the U.S. government and investments from companies including General Motors in battery technology should benefit the mining companies, according to John Ciampaglia, CEO of Sprott Asset Management. "We talk to people all around the world, and there's a very consistent and global theme that's building around energy transition. Sprott's funds, including the Sprott Energy Transition Materials ETF (SETM) , are focused on mining stocks. Other funds on the market take a broader approach by bundling together mining stocks and battery manufacturers or technology companies, including Global X's Lithium and Battery Tech ETF (LIT) . The Amplify Lithium and Battery Technology ETF (BATT) goes even farther, incorporating electric vehicle stocks such as Tesla in its portfolio.
The ETF community is looking to see if they will catch any of the breeze from the obsession with ChatGPT and artificial intelligence in general. Many ETF funds have AI-related ETFs, and so far anything with "artificial intelligence" in the title is catching a tailwind in 2023: AI ETFs rally (YTD) First Trust Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (ROBT) , up 19% iShares Robotics & Artificial Intelligence (IRBO) , up 23% ARK Autonomous Technology & AI (ARKQ) , up 24% Global X Robotics & AI (BOTZ) , up 20% Of course, stocks associated with AI have been moving up fast as well. AI plays in 2023 BigBear.ai up 51% C3.ai up 24% Baidu up 19% Microsoft up 8% Alphabet up 8% Here's what's interesting: Prices are up for the AI ETFs, but inflows have not been strong. It happened with marijuana stocks, with crypto, with the whole raft of thematic tech ETFs like cybersecurity, social media and 3-D printing. A recent study found that over their first five years, specialized ETFs lose about 30% of their value, when risk-adjusted.

Everyone here is amazed at how forgotten segments of the market have rebounded in 2023: international, growth, small cap and bonds. Advisors here are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that there would be a recession ins 2023, and now maybe not. "With real wage growth, large payroll growth and earnings beating expectations it equals a soft landing at worst and maybe no recession near term." Most advisors here are coming to grips with Powell's insistence the Fed will not lower rates this year. Their Equal Weight S & P 500 ETF (RSP) has also attracted significant inflows from investors wary of market cap weighted indexes.

A leveraged ETF acts as a multiplier for the performance of the fund's underlying index. Morrison said she believes that both retail and institutional investors use Direxion's leveraged funds, though the majority of the users are probably retail. The leveraged funds are viewed with skepticism by some regulators and financial advisors. The leveraged funds are based on single-day derivatives, and holding them for a longer period time means could result in the performance diverging from the label. "If you don't trade them daily, you need to make a decision daily," Morrison said.

Investment giant Vanguard has made its mark as a provider of low-cost, passive index funds and ETFs, but there is still a role for active management to play, the company's CEO said Tuesday. Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley said at the Exchange ETF Conference in Miami that the company has about 20% of its assets in active strategies, down from about 90% when he started at the company more than three decades ago. And if you have the risk appetite for active, it's going to play much more on the sideline," he added. Low management fees are still important in active strategies, because they can keep portfolio managers from taking unnecessary risks, Buckley said. One example of an active strategy that has paid off for Vanguard clients is the Vanguard Ultra-Short Bond ETF (VUSB) , which launched in April 2021.

I'm at the ETF Exchange Conference in Miami Beach, where 2,000 registered investment advisors and ETF providers have descended on the city for the industry's largest gathering. Think active, dividend, foreign debt and alternative income ETFs," Tom Lydon, of VettaFi, the conference sponsor, told me. "I believe fixed income ETFs are setup to have a historic year," Nate Geraci from the ETF Store said in January. This year, they're back, but despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors have yet to throw significant sums of money into the game. "Despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors are yet to start allocating again.
They're emphasizing growth right now," van Eck said at the Exchange ETF conference in Miami. The iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) had a total return of more than 10% this year, through Feb. 3. MCHI YTD mountain This popular China ETF is outperforming in 2023. Van Eck pointed to the outsized growth of major U.S. tech firms as a key reason for that outperformance, but said that era appears to be over.
